I can’t put away the winter coats just yet.

    It’s official.

    I am that mom.

You know, the one who sends her kid to school not dressed warmly enough?  And everybody looks at that poor kid and quietly whispers about the incompetent mother who couldn’t check the weather before letting her kid leave the house not dressed warmly enough.

    That’s me.

Two of my children left for school this morning with nothing more for a coat than a mere sweatshirt.  Because their spring jackets were too small.  Or I couldn’t find them.  Either way, they weren’t dressed for the weather today.

And I thought it would be okay.  Until I went outside this morning, wearing nothing more for a coat than a mere sweatshirt myself.  And I was freezing.

    Freezing.

I feel really bad that my kids are cold today.  I’m also sure the lunch moms will be talking about me and my poor freezing children at lunch, wondering what kind of mother would send her kids out in just a sweatshirt on a chilly day like today.

I’m not sure which bothers me more.

Have you ever sent your child out dressed completely wrong?  Please let me know I’m not alone.

You’re SO not alone! We all do it! We don’t have time to check the weather. We’re mom’s. And, any mom WILL understand that.

    Don’t fret it!

I checked the weather and even then, sent my daughter out in a sweatshirt. I don’t believe in wearing coats after March. And who cares what the other Mom’s say!

heck yeah, i have-and they survived- usually without even complaining that they were indeed cold. one time a few summers ago, boo wanted to wear her fave skirt like every day- i usually let her, since she’s the youngest and i’m so over appearances, for the most part, a young hip mom commented on “that skirt” she wears every day- i just laughed it off while mumbling slutt, under my breath. just kidding. but it did bug a bit.

Just about every day, it seems. I usually offer a half-hearted, “Want a jacket?”, to which they always respond, “NO”, and then I put my jacket on and go about my day. Mom of the year I’m not.

I agree with the others. I’ll force my kids to wear coats if it’s below zero. But much of the time, I’m not going to fight them over outerwear. If they don’t want to wear a coat on a day when its 35 and rainy, so be it. If they have to stay inside at recess, they’ll think twice before refusing a coat the next day.

All that to say — I never judge what others kids are wearing. If they aren’t dressed appropriately, I’m much more likely to think its the kids’ fault than the mom’s. So don’t be too hard on yourself.

(By the way, doesn’t summer sound wonderful right now? When you don’t even have to think about coats and sweatshirts and boots and hats? Ahhh. For the feel of flip-flops on my feet….)

Oh, yeah, I’ve done it. We all have. I’m also the mom that sends her kids to school in the fall on the first cold day in their flood pants because it suddenly turns cold and I have not bought any new long pants since the year before. Don’t feel bad. We’re ALL that mom.

Oh Girl…you are not the only one. To punish myself, I didn’t wear a jacket today. My girls have outgrown all of their clothes, and they will be wearing floods for a while as well. If the mean old lunch Moms are talking about you, they are probably talking about me as well…we are in this together.

Yep. It was 65 yesterday. I was all set to put Logan in a spring jacket when my husband stopped me because it’s SO NOT going to be 65 today.

I couldn’t find a long sleeved uniform shirt for T this morning and totally tried to pull off the short sleeved polo. Until I came downstairs and he was eating breakfast with a blanket around his shoulder. Mom of the year, I am.

Yeah but wait until they are older and you can’t - even if you try to - get them to dress correctly no matter the weather.

I do it all the time! Somehow I always manage to dress them incorrectly for the weather!

Oh you are sooooo not alone! Living in Texas we rarely have to wear a COAT, but there are times when we NEED them and what happens if you leave your coat in Texas, but go to Kansas for the weekend?? You end up buying a coat you will only wear that one weekend!!!

I went to bed last night and realized I had not supervised my son’s overnight packing for the sleepover he was at. He packed himself up and I would love to say I assumed he had it under control, but that would imply it occurred to me at all.

I know for a fact he didn’t pack a toothbrush. And I should have thought to send his allergy meds. (Pine pollen is peaking in Atlanta.)

As long as no one dies, it’s not the end of the world, right?

Yes I have. Probably today I did not dress him warmly enough. Or, if not today, for sure yesterday. You are not alone.

I’m going to call this phenomonon, “Teaching the kids to think for themselves and dress themselves properly by learning the hard way.”
    Amen.
