In which I reveal that I like to cry.
I watched Juno recently. Because I was curious as to what all the talk was about. And I love Jennifer Garner. We are practically BFF’s, because I was once a double agent for the CIA too.
Not really.
I just played one on TV.
And my wig was blue, not pink.
I liked Juno. K did not. Big surprise. He said it was a chick flick. Well, of course it was. Did he think a movie called Juno about a pregnant girl was going to be like another Die Hard installment?
Juno was sweet and funny and actually kind of inspiring. Oh, and I cried. And not just the polite movie theatre cry, where the tears run down your cheeks but you keep the sobs quiet so as not to embarrass yourself.
Oh no. I was at home on my couch sobbing. It was loud and my nose was dripping and it was ugly. It was the framed note written on the Jiffy Lube receipt. It got me. There was no holding back once I saw that note Juno wrote to Vanessa.
And K was all like, ”YOU’RE CRYING?!???!” like I was some crazy woman or something.
And I was like, “YOU’RE NOT?!???!” like he was some cold hearted piece of stone.
But whatever. How could I expect emotion from a man who owns the SAW trilogy? And actually watches them.
I love movies. I like to laugh and think and and watch bombs go off and see people get rescued by moving helicopters off of a burning building.
And I like to cry.
And Juno made me cry.
So I got to thinking, what other movies have me weep? Bawl? Blubber? Sob?
There are quite a few.
1. Steel Magnolias. One of my favorites. I always swore I’d name my daughter Shelby and my son Jackson. And live in the South. I love the sarcasm, the gossip and the one liners in this movie. And the sassiness. This movie is just plain sassy. And so darn sad.
2. Terms of Endearment. So Debra Winger is terminally ill in this movie. And she dies at the end. And leaves her kids and her mom. And I cry and cry whenever I see this movie. I wish my mom and I were more like Emma and Aurora. And I’ve always loved the name Aurora.
3. The Bodyguard. Because he took a bullet for her. There is nothing more romantic than that. I still have the VHS tape of this movie. I don’t have anything to play it on, but I cannot throw it away. It would be like throwing away part of 1992.
4. We Are Marshall. From the Ashes We Rose. Now that has to be top five in All Time Best Tag Lines. If there is a top five. Those poor boys. I just wanted to hug Nate Ruffin. And tell him everything would be alright. This movie was more than just a sports movie. I confess, I may have been chanting along during the student body chant of ”WE ARE. MARSHALL.” Right there in my family room. Oh yes I was.
5. Beaches. Well of course Beaches. It goes with my whole dying and leaving a child behind thing that I seem to enjoy in a tear jerk-er. And I love that this story is about friends. I don’t have a friend like CC and Hillary were to each other. That makes me kind of sad. I love the part where Hillary is about to die and they are sitting on the beach and she is wrapped in a blanket and CC just looks at her. Waterworks.
6. Stepmom. Ditto 1, 2, and 5. I mean really, I think I’ve covered it. The mom is sick. The mom dies. The end.
7. Philadelphia. I really think it was the opera music that made this movie extra emotional. I hope I don’t die with opera music playing. That is too depressing. Opera makes everything seem more serious. But this movie…brings out my ugly cry.
8. Mask. Two words. Puffy Eyes. I have this on my Tivo right now. And I can’t bear to watch it again. But I can’t delete it, because I can’t do that to poor Rocky Dennis. And what if I want to watch it again? I love Rocky Dennis and I can watch this movie over and over again. Rocky is noble and strong and fun and full of life and love. And he makes me feel ashamed for thinking about my zits and my big nose and my sagging eyelids. Rocky=perspective. Lesson learned.
9. My Life. Oh Michael Keaton you may be Batman but I will always think of you as Bob Jones. So I start crying at the beginning of this one and I don’t stop until the credits roll. Sometimes I will see this movie on and I’ll stop to watch and I have to ask myself, “Why are you doing this to yourself?” And still I watch. Knowing full well my eyes will be swollen shut the next day. This movie is so sad, it is just cruel. “Dying is a really hard way to learn about living.” Enough said.
10. Ordinary People The Jarrett Family. I have driven by “their” house and I actually feel like they really lived there. Even though I know they didn’t. But I really care about this family, so I feel like it is okay to pretend. When I was younger, I loved Conrad and hated the mom, Beth. Now I’m a mom, and I don’t hate Beth so much anymore. I don’t necessarily agree with her, but I understand. Being the mom is hard.
So that’s my top 10. There are others, of course. Brian’s Song and Platoon and The Cure and Remember the Titans. But those 10 are the ones that make me cry till it hurts.
So tell me, what movies make you cry? Which ones have I missed? I’d love to watch them.
And you know what else? This is my 200th post.
Now that is nothing to cry about.
So let’s have ourselves a little contest.
Leave me a comment with your favorite sad movie, one that is going to make me sob and need to apply the Preperation H to the bags under my eyes from all the crying, and I will choose a random winner to send my three favorites to from my sad movie list.
(Unless you don’t want 8,9 and 10.)
((Although I don’t know why you wouldn’t.))
(((But if you don’t, I guess you could tell me which you do want.)))
((((But 8,9 and 10 are really good, just so you know.))))
And then we can have swollen eyes together.

Do you know, I cannot come up with a single movie that made me cry…which is ridiculous because I know there must have been loads. I mean, I cry at commercials, for heaven’s sake.
I’ll be back once my brain returns from hiatus.

Well, seeings how I cried in “the Princess Diaries” and “Nanny McPhee” I think this could be the LONGEST post in the history of, well, you get the picture. I cry in anything because to cry for me is to show any type of emotion - sad, sentimental, very angry, jealousy, - its all there and I’m always crying. And my poor husband because I don’t even try to hide it anymore. Because, well, you know, it is what it is.
But for the record I think my favorite movie is the American President because Annette Benning is just so dang lovely as she awkwardly works her way into the President’s heart! And when they dance and he tells her that everyone is looking at her it is just so DANG ROMANTIC and I can’t even dance let alone look that good with a short haircut. Sigh.
Good movie.
Good blogs, my friend - congrats on the 200 times. You are one of my favs.

Congrats on 200 posts.
There are a few in your list I don’t recognize so I need to go watch those ones.
Most of my fav weepies are in there though. My first ever weepy film was Kramer V Kramer. And my most recent one was “PS I Love You” (although I preferred the book).

Great choices on your “sad flicks” and I will have to agree with you that anything that involves children becoming motherless is just absolutely heart-wrenching.
Well, the most recent movie viewing that involved tears was definitely “Meet the Robinsons.” Have you ever SEEN this movie? The song “Little Wonders” that plays after Cornelius gets adopted about puts me over the edge.
I had to download it to my ipod.
And try not to cry while I run.
Seriously, Disney should NOT make one weep.
Oh, I also like the movie, “Where the Heart Is” with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd. That one can also make me cry.
And “The Notebook”–that one is an all-out bawlfest.

Simon Birch and My Girl. How can you not cry at the end of My Girl when she tells him to get out of the casket and that he needs his glasses, because he can’t see without his glasses!?
I need to go watch those movies again. So good.

Here’s the thing. I avoid the movies that make me cry. I only like the happy and uplifting kind of movie.
And my husband loves the Saw movies. So clearly we are unable to enjoy the movies together.
I did, however, bawl my eyes out at August Rush. BAWLED MY EYES OUT. As did The King, but don’t tell him that I told you.

Oh how I love and hate those movies at the same time. I love them but I hate how I can’t control the flood gates! My Life certainly did that to me and so did Simon Birch oh and Cast Away (why can’t he have her back… why does she have to be married to someone else?). I’ve heard, but haven’t see, that the Bucket List is like this. I can’t wait to see it in the privacy of my own home where my husband will also look at me in “aw” that someone can cry that much over a movie!
Smiles (and some tears for all the good heart-felt flicks out there),

My older daughters wanted to see Juno. I was putting on makeup when they were watching it so when I started tearing up at the end, I left the room and I had them tell me about it later. I didn’t want to have to reaply the makeup. We all knew that the men that we live with wouldn’t want to watch it so I let them watch it early in the day. I sure hope you have a great weekend!! Hugs! BTW- Awesome list!!

Oh, gosh. I was going to comment even without the giveaway.
Let’s see. “My Girl” had be SOBBING the first time I saw it.
I boo-hooed through “Simon Birch.”
During “Shadowlands,” I cried so hard a friend thought I was laughing.
And I don’t cry easily at movies. And I especially don’t SOB during movies, so these were darned good “crying” movies, as far as I am concerned.

First of all, Congratulations on your 200th post!!! What a feat.
I loved the movies you had in your top ten. And I haven’t seen Juno but have been told by many people that I should, guess I will now.
For my sad ones, and I love a good tear jerker. I have to say Untamed Heart by far. But I did also cry uncontrollably at Shindler’s List, Ghost and more recently P.S. I Love You.
The only movie I can get my fiance to cry to is Brian’s Song and he will openly admit that too.
Have a great weekend.!!

You nailed it on all-time best ‘make-you-cry’ movies. Especially Steel Magnolias - I sob on that one. And Beaches. Just hearing the song ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ brings me to tears. And Stepmom - just the thought of getting sick and having to leave my kids. Well, I just can’t even go on with that thought.
Moving on.
I’m a sap, too, and I watch movies over and over, knowing they make me cry. I cry at Hallmark commercials. And Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Can you say emotional?!
To add to your awesome list:
Forrest Gump
Message in a Bottle & The Notebook & A Walk to Remember (any book by Nicholas Sparks makess me cry, so of course, the movies do, too!)
Bridge to Teribithia - I read the book when I was young, so I knew what was going to happen. But, I guess part of me forgot. So, watching it with my 7 year old was very emotional.
City of Angels
Bed of Roses - pretty old with Christian Slater. Just one of those romantic ones that makes you cry
Ledgends of the Fall - I recently watched this one when I couldn’t sleep one night…I had forgotten how intense it is.
Meet Joe Black
Father of the Bride 1 & 2
Ok, I’m almost ashamed to admit this last one, but……
You’ve Got Mail. I know it wasn’t sad, but I was so happy when they finally got together. So, happy tears, I guess.
And, my 7 year old wants me to add High School Musical 2. Because even though it ends up happy, when Troy & Gabriella break up “it just made my heart hurt and I couldn’t stop crying.” Hmmm….think she gets it honestly? I’m so screwed.
Happy 200th post! You are one of my all-time favorite blogs, and you are an amazing writer. Congrats to you!

I don’t have huge crying jags, but y’know those MOMENTS?
I bawled when the Titanic sank and I thought of all those people in their fear and regret.
The end of On a Clear Day, when he feels the loss of his son all over again and screams it to the sky, and I just bawl. Then he reconnects with his other son and I bawl harder.
I realize Backdraft isn’t exactly a chick flick, but when Steven has been mortally wounded and his little brother is telling him to hang on, and he holds out his shaking, bloody hand and gasps his final words “Who’s your brother, Brian?” *sniff* “You are, Steven.” *SOB*
I cried so hard when Jim lost Wilson in Castaway. It was worse than losing the girl.
Endings that make me cry:
Apollo 13- that horrible moment of suspense when you’re not sure if they made it or not, and they show each family’s fear and dread and hope. Even though I know how it’s gonna end I still bawl like a baby when he says “Houston, this is Odyssey. It’s good to see you again.”
Whale Rider- when her grandfather realizes that he’s been wrong about her. Buckets!
The Iron Giant- when the robot saves the town by flying up and intercepting hte nuclear warhead and just before impact he whispers “superman…” SO SWEET and so HEARTWRENDING.
Fly Away Home- when she makes it. I don’t know. Just the combination of the music and the story and the acting, it all ust turns me into a weepy mushball.

this is really hard for me because movies rarely make me cry. though i know some have brought a few tears, i just have to really concentrate to remember which ones.
mostly, it’s the music that accompanies the moment, that brings on the tears.
cold mountain. when she sees him (jude law) in the snow and then he gets shot.

Okay, I love the movie My Life… another good Michael Keaton flick Jack Frost - I tried to watch it with my kids and couldn’t even make it through the whole thing - we had to shut it off.
Another great kid movie that always makes me cry, even if you only see the last 5 minutes - Homeward Bound - I just can’t handle it when the old Shadow comes up over the hill - I’m almost crying now just thinking about it!!
Obviously I need a life because the only movies I can really even remember are kid movies. My 6 year old son cries during HSM2 when Troy & Gabriella break up, and then he cries again at the end of the movie - isn’t he sweet.

A bunch of those that you mentioned also affected me. But then again, I cry at all those commercials during the hallmark movies…
Some of my favorite cryers…OLD YELLER. Oh.my.God. I will NOT watch it because it is too painful for me. Seriously.
Somersby. Richard Gear and Jodi Foster. Really great movie. I cry cry cry.
Awakenings. Oh, the sadness in that one. The mother that cares for her son with catatonic schizoprenia for YEARS. I can just feel what she feels when he comes out of that schizophrenic state.
There have to be a million others, I just can’t think of them anymore. Oh, ET was a cryer, too.

Congratulations on your 200th post!
That is really impressive.
You are a fabulous writer.
I think I may have told you that once or ten times.
I too enjoyed many of the movies you listed.
My favorite movie of all time is Steel Magnolias.
When Sally Field was standing there talking about her Shelby and how her children would never know their mama.
The flood gates opened.
When she said she just wanted to hit somebody and Olympia Dukakis offered up “Weezy”… the tears fell hard and laughter ensued.
Did I mention that I LOVE that movie?
Okay, without any commentary my favorite CRY MOVIES:
Steel Magnolias
Step Mom
Ghost
Titanic
The Notebook
A Walk to Remember
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Bambi
I cry at the drop of a hat…it doesn’t take much.
But, the aforementioned movies are definitely at the top of my list for tearjerkers!
Enjoy!

I am a cryer when it comes to movies - although I really try not to watch those, it just takes so much out of me. I didn’t think I was ever going to recover from “We are Marshall” - but my all time crying movie is “Snoopy Come Home” I saw it as a small child in the movie theater. I cried for days. I was a very sensitive child lol Tears are streaming down my face right now - sheesh.
Goodness - OK, I’ve cried at all of the movies you mentioned, except for the one or two that I haven’t seen, for the sole reason that I knew they were crying movies & I didn’t think I was up to it when the opportunity came to watch them.

P.S. I forgot to mention my ALL TIME FAVORITE movie line is from Terms of Endearment. When Aurora is there, taking care of her daughter in the hospital, and the Astronaut shows up. They hug, and he’s getting ready to leave, and she tells him she loves him. Now if you want a laugh until you cry movie, check out “Just Married”. Very hilarious! As for a boo hoo cry, I like Here on Earth. It’s more than a couple years old and I don’t think it was extremely popular at the box office, but it’s a good tear jerker.
