Reason #4,612 why I am not Mother Of The Year

Sometimes, when you are not a demanding younger kid or a whole-world-revolves-around-me oldest kid, you can kind of get lost in the shuffle.  It’s not fair, but it does happen.

My nine year old daughter has skating two nights a week so she sometimes misses dinner if everyone has eaten while she is gone.  She’s hungry when she gets home, it’s getting late, she’s tired, and I know she wants to eat so she can get ready for bed.

I need to do a better job of meeting her needs when she gets home.  Instead I often find myself caught up in the bed and bath routine of my younger kids and the never ending homework of my older daughter.

“Mom, can you make me some dinner?”

“Sure.  Just let me get the little kids in the shower.  I’ll be right with you.”

    10 minutes later.

“Mom!  Can I have something to eat?”

“Yes.  I’ll be right with you.  I just need to type this assignment up for your sister.”

    10 more minutes go by.

“Mom I’m hungry, can I eat now?”

“I’m coming, sweetie.  Go in the kitchen and I’ll be right there.”

Another 10 minutes pass, give or take.

I finally make it into the kitchen to heat up her dinner.

But she has beaten me to it.

    I love this middle kid.

What a sweetheart. And you see, she’ll be the one that “does for herself” when she gets older. :)

I used to think that birth order played no role in a person’s personality development. I thought it a bunch of hooey. I now think that it has a huge impact on you. Good OR bad, I think there is something to it.

I think you sound like a great mom. Don’t beat yourself up.

Awwww! If nothing else at least you are teaching her to be self-sufficient. Right! That’s it!

What a precious little girl. It must be hard to get that all put together. But she definitely knows how to help out. :-) Way to go for her!!

My kids could take a lesson from yours on self-sufficiency. The middle ones are usually the most independent. I see that in my daughter a lot. Love her braids!

    those middle kids are cute!
my middle, is one i have to make an effort with as well. so easy going and so easy to miss, because of her few demands.
but, we are aware and we try and we love and in the end, it’s all good.

    she really is a doll.

    and welcome back..
looks like the trip so warm and relaxing.
everything we hope for…except the end-not what we hope for, but always what we get…a real live dose of reality!
    repeat after me:
    It was worth it!

I’ve TOTALLY done that. Only I usually neglect my first. She’s so patient and easy-going and sweet — the non-greasy wheel. I hate it that she’s the one I keep putting off.

(But look at that smile! Doesn’t look like she’s taking it too bad.)

    Thank goodness for microwaves, right?

My oldest is the same. Only difference is: he’s a 15 year old boy… he’ll eat anything, everything, cold or warm with no preference for what the temperature *should* be!
