They don’t call me a retriever for nothing
Howdy Internets.
Koko the yellow lab here. It’s been awhile. I’ve gotten bigger, and I am eating like a baby elephant. Whatever that means.
Actually, what it means, is that I am old enough to start learning to earn my keep around here. That’s right, the people are putting me to work.
The humans around this place don’t feel the type of work I’m currently occupying my days with is earning me my three bowls of food a day.
I’m an extremely busy pup. I chew a bone every day. I eat. I drip water everywhere. I love to search for socks and mittens. I snuggle in a ball for long winter naps, and perhaps my most favorite way to pass the time would be to annoy the ever lovin’ daylights out of this old biddy.
She is no fun at all. She sleeps like twenty hours a day. She only eats…GET THIS!…one time a day, and she never wants to play. And the strangest thing about her? She doesn’t follow the humans around. They can come and go from room to room all day long and she never moves. Now me? I believe in following my people around all day long. A pup can never know when they might throw a little cheese her way.
Anywoof, back to my new job. My training involves learning to go out and get the paper when these owners of mine are too lazy to go outside in the cold my owners let me out in the morning and bring it back to them. I can do that. No problem. Well, there is a little problem. I’m still a puppy, and I’m pretty easily distracted. But I’m working on it.
Wanna watch a recent training session?
Here’s me, with the paper. I’ve just run to the middle of the driveway and picked it up. But then I saw these big piles of snow and I just had to give one a quick climb. Don’t worry though, I won’t let go of the paper.
So now, I’m debating. I’ve still got my paper, but do I run back to the human at the door like I’m supposed to? Or do I explore some interesting goings on around me? This is after all, training, and the human is not really in her bathrobe this time, so I could get away with doing my own thing. What’s the worst she could do? She is helpless to resist my cuteness. It’s really a no brain-er.
“Hey kid. Whatcha doin’? Sledding?”
“Sure kid. I’d love to go with you. Let me hop on!” I’m a lucky pup, this kid is fun to play with!
Oops! We fell off and I dropped my paper. “Hey kid, get out of my way! I’ve got to get my paper back!”
I need to give this paper to the kid. Because the human is a little mad that I was so easily distracted. If I give the paper to the kid, she can give it to the human. That old task master. Doesn’t she know that we pups just want to have a little fun?
Seriously, I wish this kid would quit pulling on my wrinkly skin and take this paper from me. I’m feeling like this training session needs to wrap up…I’m getting hungry.
“Take it, kid. Thanks a bunch. I’ll play with you anytime.”

Too cute. He seems pretty serious about the paper if you ask me. Our dogs think the paper is for shredding.
I’m loving the old biddy. She looks very sweet. And calm. And calm is my favorite quality in a dog bar none.

Oh Koko, I’m with you my friend. I have one of those old chicks here too and she only wants to bark at me and sleep. And poop OUTSIDE. Doesn’t she know it’s COLD out there. WHACKO. I wish you lived closer, we’d play for DAYS!
Love,

That’s awesome! I love the puppy perspective! And I’m so impressed that you try to teach your dogs stuff!!!! Ours just stole a deer leg from the neighbour’s dog and I’m pretty proud of him for that…

Hilarious post. We used to have a golden, too, and your post made me miss him so much. They are such wonderful dogs. And, while he is super cute, he doesn’t hold a candle to the little one in pink. She is adorable.

Oh how cute! My son wants a new lab so bad and when I got a little dog he was mad. I told him as soon as the two older labs (12 & 14) are gone we will get new labs.
Have fun with you pup!
